M.S. Library Media and Information Technology

Ranked #1 by OnlineU as the most affordable online Master's in Library Science program in the United States, our Library Media & Information Technology Program is accredited by the American Association of School Librarians (AASL) and prepares individuals to be effective PK-12 school librarians in the areas of teaching and learning, information access, and program administration. We focus on theoretical and practical knowledge of schools, learners and best practices. We have two options: the Master of Science Degree in Library Media & Information Technology is a 33 hour program for degree seeking candidates. The certification option is a 23 hour program for candidates who currently have a master's degree.

Program Goals

The Library Media and Information Technology Program endorses the AASL National School Library Standards for Learners, School Librarians, and School Libraries.

The Library Media and Information Technology Program at NSU prepares individuals to be successful school librarians and equips them with both theoretical and practical knowledge of schools, learners, and best practices.

The Library Media and Information Technology Program prepares candidates to effectively:

  1. participate as active partners in the teaching and learning process.
  2. use strategies to foster learner motivation to read for learning, personal growth, and enjoyment.
  3. lead and collaborate with members of the learning community to effectively design and implement solutions that positively impact learner growth and strengthen the role of the school library.
  4. evaluate information and resources to support the school's curriculum and learning goals.
  5. model and teach ethical use of information and technology in the creation of new knowledge.

These skills are in accordance with the ALA/AASL/CAEP School Librarian Preparation Standards (2019).

Licensure Programs

Northeastern State University offers initial teacher licensure programs at the traditional undergraduate level for graduates wishing to teach in Oklahoma. We also offer advanced licensure programs and programs for other school professionals at the graduate level. We do not guarantee to meet the licensure requirements of other states. You will be responsible for verifying that your program of study meets your desired state's licensure requirements.

Professional Licensure Disclosure

Programs at Northeastern State University that prepare students for initial licensure as educators are designed to meet the licensure standards set by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. Students seeking licensure in another state are advised to contact the appropriate licensing board in that state to determine specific requirements of guidelines for reciprocity. Northeastern State University cannot confirm whether a particular licensure program meets requirements for licensure outside of the State of Oklahoma.
