Mission Statement

The College of Education is committed to continuous improvement by achieving results through rigor, relevance, relationships, and responsibility, thus facilitating the transformation of candidate to highly qualified professional in a diverse global society.

The College of Education shapes the future of its region as the educational partner of choice by effectively preparing educators, professional school personnel, and other allied professionals to have a positive impact on the lives of students, families, and communities.

RIGOR

By intentionally moving beyond minimum standards set by accrediting bodies, we utilize evidence-based practices in academic, extracurricular and administrative areas, to create a learning environment that supports independent thinking, creativity, and innovation.

Outcome #1

Provide programs/majors that are rigorous and relevant, using a continuous improvement model that prepares us for external and internal review.

Action Steps:

  1. Align and/or realign the indicators from our accrediting bodies and set curricular standards for students to master and/or exceed.
  2. Identify and apply key evidence-based curricular components regarding theoretical and pedagogical practice in programs
  3. Provide opportunities for candidates and faculty to engage in activities and curricula that facilitate rigor, creativity, and innovation. (Also, see Outcome #2)

Outcome #2

The College of Education will integrate immersive/experiential learning experiences with authentic performance assessments within programs.

Action Steps:

  1. Provide multiple opportunities for students and faculty to demonstrate learning through hands-on and immersive learning experiences (e.g. international study abroad, robotics, reading tutoring, cross-curricular engagement and experiences with diverse populations).
  2. Provide and maintain a current index (on-going) of immersive learning opportunities for public viewing on the COE website.
  3. 3. Embed authentic performance assessments to monitor effectiveness of immersive learning experiences.

Outcome #3

The College of Education will support undergraduate and graduate students participating in faculty-mentored research and creative activity.

 

Action Steps:

  1. Utilize different methods to highlight faculty/student research and creativity.
  2. Participate in local, regional, state and national research activities which highlight student-led, faculty-mentored research and creative activity.
  3. Continue to support and encourage undergraduate and graduate students to participate in research and creative activity projects

The College of Education will support and expand faculty research and creative activity.

 

Action Steps:

  1. Develop partnerships with local schools, tribes, agencies, and community stakeholders to support faculty research and creative activity.
  2. Establish interdisciplinary collaboration to support faculty research and creative activity.
  3. Submission of internal and external grant funding proposals to support faculty research and creative activity.

The College of Education will integrate technology within the classroom and programs to increase efficiency, promote subject area innovation, and/or student accessibility.

Action Steps:

  1. Explore technologies that will be useful and feasible for schools and classrooms to implement and embed those technologies within COE programs.
  2. Collaborate and partner with school districts and community/state entities to stay abreast of developing uses of technology and innovative strategies.

Outcome #1

The College of Education will encourage the recruitment and retention of a diverse faculty/staff who are committed to education, and support these faculty members in serving students.

Action Steps:

  1. Review recruitment strategies and highlight efforts used to recruit and retain diverse faculty/staff who are committed to education.
  2. Develop and maintain a support/mentoring program for new faculty/staff.
  3. Provide professional development annually to improve and sustain faculty/staff relationships.
  4. Provide professional development annually to inform an environment/culture conducive to inclusion and diversity utilizing scholarly dialogue and collaboration.

Outcome #2

The College of Education will plan to increase the availability of external funding to support students.

Action Steps:

  1. Collaborate internally and with the NSU Foundation to develop ways to increase external funding and student scholarships.
  2. Increase student awareness of education-based scholarships.
  3. Look for new opportunities to fund creative and innovative projects centered around, and to benefit, COE students.
  4. Build existing scholarships (i.e. COE SNAG Scholarship) through earlier and more intensive marketing, and greater faculty involvement.

Outcome #3

The College of Education will support faculty and staff in research, scholarship, and creative activities.

Action Steps:

  1. Sustain and encourage faculty/staff initiative research, scholarship, and creative activities support groups.
  2. Establish a support group for RTP faculty mentors.

Outcome #4

 

The College of Education will extend the collaboration and partnerships with appropriate external groups (tribes, schools, clinics and community entities).

Action Steps:

  1. Build upon existing partnerships with local schools (650 schools/buildings & CASC, TCC, and other community colleges), tribal organizations (Cherokee & Creek), clinics and community groups; and other various stakeholders.
  2. Develop new and sustain current ‘Grow Your Own’ teacher programs and other COE concurrent high school course offerings.
  3. Develop more in-depth partnerships with select Local Education Agencies (LEA’s) in order to inform and meet the needs of our stakeholders.
  4. Cultivate new partnerships with schools and organizations in our service area.

Outcome #5

 

The College of Education will support academic advisement and faculty mentorship to COE students.

Action Steps:

  1. Follow the university’s shared model of academic advisement guidelines.
  2. Establish a professional advising and mentoring network within the college that parallels the university’s shared model of academic advisement that allows for comprehensive and continued review of a student's pursuits throughout their academic career using professional advisors and faculty mentoring.
  3. Collaborate among academic advisors and faculty mentors to serve to all COE students.
  4. Attend professional development held by the university, state (OACADA), and/or national (NACADA).
  5. Participate in various recruitment events.

The College of Education will advertise the attractiveness and visibility of the college’s high quality programs to a diverse range of potential students.

Action Steps:

  1. Attract new diverse students through innovative marketing and communication measures by completing and implementing a marketing plan.
  2. Continue to revise and implement a college wide recruitment plan in collaboration with our faculty, stakeholders, and university support entities (i.e. Admissions and Recruitment Dept., Career Services, Graduate College etc.).
  3. Utilize technology, emails, and social media to ‘tell our story’ and advertise programs (i.e. continuously update website, improve social media presence etc.).
  4. Seek funding to enhance the attractiveness and visibility of relevant programs.

The College of Education will initiate and sustain local, regional and global partnerships to enhance the unit’s student experience and impact those who they will serve.

Action Steps:

  1. Build upon and sustain existing partnerships (relationship building).
  2. Create opportunities for new partnerships in local, regional and global markets.
  3. Facilitate student success by enhancing and developing programs that engage students in community initiatives.

The College of Education will promote and support student retention.

Action Steps:

  1. Alleviate barriers within programs to meet the needs of each field of practice.
  2. Discover ways to incentivize students to remain in current declared majors.
  3. Continue to implement Pre-Professional Teacher Induction program to help encourage students for retention/graduation; begin similar induction program for all COE programs.
  4. Benchmark graduation rates and time-to-degree for each degree program.

The College of Education will promote scholarly activity and publications through support and the enhancement of incentives (i.e. recognition, annual research awards, grant funding, stipends, release time, etc.).

Action Steps:

  1. Highlight faculty and student scholarly success in the college website, college alumni newsletter, university “Academic Times”, in our college academic annual report, and other publications.
  2. Continue to recognize and share significant contributions in teaching, service and scholarship at our annual fall meeting.
  3. Develop incentives to increase faculty consistency in documenting accomplishments/achievements.

The College of Education will engage and develop future leaders in the college.

Action Steps:

  1. Advocate, encourage, and partner with faculty and staff to increase support and facilitate the development of leaders within the college.
  2. Offer and/or support leadership development opportunities for faculty, staff, and students.

Action Steps:

  1. Establish a culture and climate instrument to allow faculty, staff, and students to self assess their growth.
  2. Provide opportunities and/or support for professional growth and development based on created self assessment analysis.

Outcome #1

The College of Education will maintain or increase the number of graduate assistantships and tuition scholarships that are available to attract diversified and potentially highly qualified students to our programs.

Action Steps:

  1. Allocate grad assistantship opportunities and tuition scholarships to clear criteria that support the goals and objects of the college and the university.
  2. Maintain or increase graduate assistantships.
  3. Fundraise through COE SNAG event annually and other fundraising events. Continue to increase scholarship base.
  4. Identify and support needs-areas for scholarship awards.

Outcome #2

The College of Education will facilitate program/unit improvement based on post graduate data (alumni in-service data).

Action Steps:

  1. Monitor employment status, admission to graduate and professional schools, and perceptions of the overall quality of degree program completed.
  2. Work with state entities to develop survey instruments to send out to first year teachers, administrators, and other employment opportunities pertaining to COE degree programs.
  3. Review, revise, or implement new exit surveys of undergraduate and graduate degree recipients.

Outcome #3

The College of Education will develop a more streamlined assessment system that provides consistent feedback (to stakeholders including university and community stakeholders) for quality assurance and improvement for undergraduate and graduate programs.

Action Steps:

  1. Collaborate with external stakeholders and other leaders to develop a two-way flow of data and evidence to improve and assess graduates and programs.
  2. Collaborate with internal personnel to create an overview of the current assessment system.
  3. Utilize national standards and strategic plan to create a more efficient assessment system that flows consistently throughout the college to the program level.
